What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest?

Despite the estimated number of annually affected people reaching 350,000 in the United States alone, SCA remains a largely unrecognized public health concern. SCA is typically caused by either a heart attack or an irregular heartbeat that causes a sudden lack of blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. When you witness what you think is a SCA, the two most important steps for any rescuer are to:

  • Start CPR Immediately – If the victim has been subject to an SCA incident and their heart is not pumping blood throughout the body, this can lead to a lack of oxygen and blood that reaches the brain. If the heart does not start again on its own, CPR is necessary.
  • Get an AED Machine -Essentially, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machine delivers a shock to the chest wall of the person, which in turn sends up to 360 joules of electricity into the heart to stun it back into a normal rhythm.

Types of Defibrillators

A defibrillator is an electric device that uses electrical currents to regulate the heart. There are three types:

  • Wearable cardioverter defibrillators (WCDs)
  • Automated external defibrillators (AEDs)
  • Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD)

An Automated External Defibrillator, or AED, is a device that can be used to save a victim of SCA and is completely external and typically used as a reaction to an unexpected SCA event.

Types of Defibrillators

You can also prevent heart attacks by using an AED.

There are many different types of AEDs in use today: some are designed for emergency responders while others are designed for preventive care.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

AEDs are a medical device that can save lives and bring someone back to consciousness when they lose their heart rhythm. They usually have 6 main FDA-approved Brands in the United States to select from.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Defibrillators are the best medical response when SCA ensues. AED’s are state-of-the-art, sophisticated devices that will accurately determine if the victim suffers from an abnormal heart rhythm. If SCA is not recognized the AED will not shock the victim automatically or when manually triggered. AED’s can detect the following:

  • Ventricular fibrillation, which is defined as rapid and uncoordinated contractions of the heart muscle that are not controlled by normal pacemaker impulses.
  • Ventricular Tachycardia, a heart condition when the heart rate of an individual is 100 beats per minute or higher.
  • Asystole is a very serious type of cardiac arrest. The trigger rate for asystole cases is unknown, but there are precautions that can be taken to prevent an episode from occurring and the condition also has many treatment options available in case anyone were to experience it.
  • PEA is a type of cardiac arrest in which there is no detectable pulse. PEA can and often does lead to death without prompt, proper intervention. When someone suffers from sudden cardiac arrest, their heart rhythm typically changes to what is called pulseless electrical activity (PEA) 55% of the time.

If an AED detects any of these conditions it will offer to deliver a shock in a range of 150 or 360 Joules depending on which AED defibrillator is in use. Some AED’s deliver a constant level of energy, measured in joules while other AED’s use an escalating energy delivery method. Defibrillators are not effective in cases of pulseless ventricular tachycardia (PVT).

Defibrillation is the use of an electric shock to restore a heart’s normal rhythm. Best Automated External Defibrillators

‘Automated’ in ‘automated external defibrillator’ means that the machine is designed to automatically read heart rhythms. AEDs use a built-in algorithm to determine the appropriate course of action based on the electrical activity detected by them. Fully Automated AEDs can deliver shocks without any input from a human, whereas Semi-Automated AEDs will only shock if there is some input from a human operator.

Choosing a defibrillator can be a life-saving decision and it’s important to make sure you do your research. You must have access to an AED to save lives. It is important to know that each US state has its own requirements when it comes to owning an AED. They differ drastically state by state and other than requiring a prescription (for the AED device) there is not another nationally mandated law regarding AED ownership. Our AED State Laws database makes researching the different State AED laws easy.
